ST. LOUIS – (COMMERCIAL THREAD) – Once again, Aperta Automated Clearinghouse (ACH) solutions have enabled a country to move from the technology of manual check clearing and settlement to the 21stst Century image-based truncation and electronic payment processing.
Over the past 12 months, the payment system in Bangladesh has been revolutionized. It has grown from a fully manual exchange of paper checks and reports to a fully automated, image-based national check truncation system and electronic funds transfer system.
The Bangladesh Automated Clearinghouse (BACH) connects the country’s 48 banks. Aperta supplied BACH with the Bangladesh Automated Check Processing System (BACPS), which has been in operation in Bangladesh since October 2010. BACPS has revolutionized the processing of check payments in Bangladesh by reducing the payment cycle from about 21 days to a few hours . In doing so, the process has been further improved by increasing safety, traceability and accountability. A central image archive is also provided so that member banks can learn about their own items that have passed through the clearing system, which in turn enables member banks to provide enhanced customer service.
The automation of member banks and the introduction of image-based check clearing provided the infrastructure and experience that enabled banks to make the transition to electronic funds transfer (EFT). Aperta again provided the Bangladesh Electronic Funds Transfer Network (BEFTN) solution which supports bulk electronic payments.
BEFTN is functionally NACHA compliant in the range of payment types provided. However, for consistency with BACPS and to facilitate the introduction of BEFTN, payment messages are based on XML.
Today marks the end of the first week of BEFTN live treatment. The facilities to automate a wide range of payments are now in place and member banks are actively encouraging their customers to use them. The main up-front benefits are expected to lead corporate clients to automate bulk payments, such as salaries, and business-to-business payments. However, regular individual payments, such as those for utilities, cell phone, etc., will follow quickly.
Aperta would especially like to thank the Bangladesh Bank (BB), its staff and advisers, the Governor of BB, Dr Atiur Rahman and all the commercial banks for their vision and commitment to achieve the extraordinary success of these projects in a timely manner. remarkably short. This led Bangladesh to move from a fully manual check clearing and settlement system to one of the most advanced payment systems in the world today.
