AUTHOR EXPLODED £ 500,000 IN BITCOIN ON DARK WEB
One author was horrified to learn that she had spent nearly £ 500,000 worth of Bitcoin to buy drugs on the dark web.
The price of bitcoin continues to fluctuate as the volatile cryptocurrency plunged last week to just 50% of its all-time high, hitting lows of just £ 21,000.
Ms Tolentino, 32, a writer for the New Yorker and published author, revealed her own Bitcoin horror story during her appearance on the Reply to all technology podcast in 2018.
She contacted the show when she recalled buying around £ 50 ($ 80) worth of Bitcoin in 2012 while exploring the Dark Web – but wasn’t sure what happened to her stash after she changed laptop.
Today, the 17.5 pieces she bought back then are now worth £ 456,253.
Thinking she might be sitting on a small fortune, the show’s Super Tech Support team joined together to try to find her missing wealth, which was worth around £ 200,000 at the time.
However, what they found out was that she had spent almost all of her Bitcoin on buying drugs from the Dark Web Silk Road marketplace.
She had hoped to find out that she had some of the money left over when she remembered buying Bitcoin to buy weed and MDMA – but she didn’t know what happened to the leftovers.
It turns out that he only had 0.00209 bitcoin left, which is worth around £ 75.
