The reported wealth of Chelsea’s new owners – compared to Newcastle United and the rest of the Premier League.
Chelsea Football Club is under new ownership after the UK government approved a £4.25 billion takeover by Todd Boehly.
Roman Abramovich put the Blues up for sale in April after having his assets frozen due to his close ties to Russian President Vladimir Putin in light of the war in Ukraine.
After months of negotiations, the Premier League, through testing by its owners and directors and the UK government, has passed a takeover bid led by Boehly, Clearlake Capital, Mark Walter and Hansjoerg Wyss.
This ends Abramovich’s 19-year ownership of the west London club, with the deal currently being finalized.
A statement read: “Late last night (Tuesday) the UK Government came to a position where we could issue a license allowing the sale of Chelsea Football Club.
“After Roman Abramovich’s sanction, the government worked hard to ensure that Chelsea Football Club could continue to play football. But we have always been clear that the long-term future of the club cannot be insured only by a new owner.
“After extensive work, we are now confident that all proceeds from the sale will not benefit Roman Abramovich or anyone else sanctioned. We will now begin the process to ensure that the proceeds from the sale are used to humanitarian causes in Ukraine, supporting the victims of war.
“The steps taken today will secure the future of this important cultural asset and protect fans and the wider football community. We have had discussions with the relevant international partners for the necessary licenses required and we thank them for any their cooperation.
Boehly is the co-founder, chairman, CEO and controlling member of Eldridge Industries, a Connecticut-based holding company, as well as the interim CEO of the Hollywood Foreign Press Association.
As for his other sports ventures, the businessman is a co-owner of the MLB franchise, the LA Dodgers, and since last year he is also a minority shareholder of the famous NBA team, the LA Lakers.
